Former NBA star Jeremy Lin announced on Wednesday that he has been married for a little over two years. The shocking Facebook post states, “After many years of being together, I married my wife in an intimate ceremony, and it’s been the highlight of my life ever since. Finally sharing this beautiful day from over a couple of years ago.”

At first blush, the stunning proclamation may seem a little bizarre, but the Christian basketball star’s desire to closely guard his privacy has been largely shaped by his meteoric rise to fame.

While ceding that his fans may be a bit blindsided by the news, Lin explained on Facebook why he tries to keep his personal life sacred, stating, “The funny thing about becoming famous overnight is no one teaches you how to deal with it.”

He continued saying, “While I still feel strongly about guarding aspects of my personal life, it has also been hard for people to not know about such a major change.”

Lin’s career accomplishments are impressive. After excelling on the court and in the classroom at Harvard University, he went on to a long and exciting pro-basketball career. He played nine years in the NBA and two-and-a-half years in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). He is remembered as a lightning-quick point guard who could score and assist well.

Two of the high points of his career were his explosive 2011-2012 season with the New York Knicks and being a part of the Toronto Raptors team when they won the NBA championship in 2019. He single-handedly infused life into a struggling Knicks squad with electrifying play that birthed the phenomenon known as “Linsanity”.

However, his fantasy life has not been a bed of roses. Suffering through numerous injuries and bouncing around to eight teams in almost as many years was difficult. These stressors and the constant racial slurs that the Taiwanese American had to face, led the young Christian to rely heavily on God.

Lin says Joshua 1:9 helped him through those tough times. The verse reads – “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

The popular superstar confesses to being a perfectionist. He has publicly admitted that he puts pressure on himself to be as close to perfect as he can be, otherwise, God can’t use him. Over the years, his continued growth and knowledge of scripture has led him to lighten up.

In a 2018 e-mail , the devout Christian had these words of encouragement to his prayer group, “God uses sinful, doubtful and proud people all through Scripture. We don’t have to be perfect. God loves us enough that He’s willing to include us in his kingdom work.”
