Debt ceiling talks continue with little progress

The White House and Republican leaders are in negotiations to avoid the first U.S. debt default.

Yesterday, both President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy appointed team members to continue talks. It’s a signal that both sides are serious about finding a compromise.

McCarthy said there was still a lot to do before a debt default on June 1. However, he was optimistic about a resolution later that day.

But a weekend comment from Biden about conceding to “tougher aid programs” has spooked some Democrats. For many, work requirements for Medicaid is not an option.

The White House tried to reassure Democrats yesterday that Biden isn’t compromising anything important.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is already seeking Republican votes for whatever compromise deal talks produce.

Biden will be in Japan until Sunday, but he cut his G7 summit itinerary short to participate directly in more debt talks.
