Easter taters? Potato producers pushing for consumers to use spuds instead of overpriced eggs

by ian

As we look to this upcoming Easter Holiday, some consumers are worried about traditions like egg hunts and egg coloring with the product’s recent hike in prices.

With this in mind, potato producers of all people are suggesting using their product instead. Potatoes USA is spearheading the effort.

The group provided tips on how to paint the spuds, asking those who partake in the effort to post their photos to social media with the hashtag “easterpotatoes.”

The thought to use potatoes over eggs actually began as a joke when egg prices first began to climb. Potatoes USA caught on to the jokes, and figured it may actually be worth promoting.

Axios found that some parents see the potato replacement to be a cost-effective way to celebrate.

Egg prices were up by over 50% in February compared to the year prior. Egg prices have since stabilized, so we’ll have to wait and see who will be using potatoes instead of eggs this year.
