Republicans’ accusations of political bias in the Biden administration’s Justice Department appeared to gain more steam Monday amid fresh evidence that former FBI agent Timothy Thibault hid whistleblower intelligence in the Hunter Biden laptop scandal.
Thibault resigned last month amid accusations that he ran interference for the Biden family ahead of the 2020 election concerning the contents of the abandoned laptop. Numerous emails and phone conversations stored in the computer’s hard drive exposed the younger Biden’s lucrative foreign business deals and cut into then-presidential candidate Joe Biden’s assertions that he had “no knowledge” of his son’s business ventures.
The New York Post reported Monday that Thibault was the “point man” for whistleblower and former Hunter Biden business partner Tony Bobulinski, but never followed up with him about the younger Biden’s shady foreign business deals that took place when Joe Biden was serving as vice president in the Obama administration.
Republicans and other critics have pointed to the laptop’s contents as evidence that Hunter Biden was cashing in on his father’s political position while Joe Biden received a percentage of the profits.
Bobulinski alleged that Joe Biden was involved with his son Hunter and brother Jim’s business dealings with Chinese energy company CEFC, which purportedly yielded $4.8 million in profits for the Bidens in 2017 and 2018. Despite Bobulinski’s bombshell revelation, however, Thibault never followed up with him, according to the Post.
Bobulinski told Thibault that he had personally spoken with Joe Biden about the Chinese Communist Party-linked CEFC deal and that the then-presidential candidate was the “big guy” referenced in communications as a recipient of a percentage of the profits. James Gilliar, another Hunter Biden business associate, also identified Joe Biden as the “big guy.”
“Unfortunately, Tony Bobulinski’s first-hand eyewitness testimony regarding President Biden’s knowledge of Hunter Biden’s compromising web of foreign financial entanglements, especially with the Chinese, was not only ignored by the media, but also by the FBI,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) told The Post.
“The suppression and censoring of his testimony and Hunter’s influence peddling impacted the 2020 election to a far greater extent than anything Russia or China could have ever achieved,” Johnson continued.
“Where does it stop?” tweeted Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee.
“According to brave whistleblowers, Timothy Thibault: -Tried to shut down an avenue of the Hunter Biden investigation. -Cooked the books on ‘domestic violent extremism’ cases. -Hid intel on Hunter and the ‘Big Guy’ Joe Biden,” Jordan wrote.
FISM reported last month that Jordan said 14 FBI whistleblowers have come forward with reports of political bias among high-ranking Justice Department officials.
In a July letter outlining whistleblower complaints to his office, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) wrote that Thibault and the FBI’s supervisory intelligence analyst Brian Auten were purportedly involved in “a scheme” to “undermine derogatory information connected to Hunter Biden by falsely suggesting it was disinformation.”
Bobulinski sat for more than five hours of questioning by the FBI’s Washington Field Office in Oct. 2020. He also handed over the contents of three cell phones to the FBI to corroborate his account. The FBI said Thibault would be Bobulinski’s “point man” for future communications. However, Bobulinski’s attorney subsequently called Thibault to establish contact following the questioning but never heard back from him.
The Post also pointed out that Bobulinski has not been called to testify before a federal grand jury investigating Hunter Biden for potential financial crimes, including tax fraud, money laundering, and unregistered foreign lobbying, despite the fact that a separate witness testified about the identity of the “Big Guy” in the same case.
Thibault resigned from the FBI last week amid whistleblower allegations of political bias and just a day after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted that the bureau encouraged Facebook to suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story in the months and weeks leading up to the 2020 election.
Days later, Attorney General Merrick Garland issued a memo to Justice Department personnel reminding them that they are not permitted to speak to lawmakers.
The US Attorney’s Office in Delaware is overseeing the Hunter Biden investigation led by the FBI’s Baltimore field office.
