Florida state Sen. Blaise Ingoglia (R) has introduced legislation that would “decertify” political parties that “previously advocated for slavery in their party platforms,” according to a report from the Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF).

Senate Bill 1248, known as the “Ultimate Cancel Act,” would direct the Florida Division of Elections to “immediately cancel the filings of a political party, to include its registration and approved status as a political party, if the party’s platform has previously advocated for, or been in support of, slavery or involuntary servitude.”

Filed with the intent to highlight the absurdity of modern-day cancel culture, the bill, if passed, would essentially cancel the Democrat party within the state. SB 1248 would immediately require Democratic voters to re-register as No Party Affiliations, prohibit public officials to operate under the name “Democrat,” and require the affected party to re-register under a different name entirely.

The Democrat party is historically known for its propensity to oppose the slavery abolition movement, largely petitioned by Abraham Lincoln and the Republican party of the 1800’s.

Critics of the bill within the Florida Democratic Party have called the bill “both unconstitutional and unserious.” A statement from a Florida Democratic spokesperson reads,

Under Ron DeSantis, Senator Ingoglia is using his office to push bills that are nothing more than publicity stunts instead of focusing on the issues that matter most to Floridians, such as reforming property insurance, addressing housing affordability, and combating climate change.

The statement continues, “The sooner DeSantis and his puppets in the legislature learn that Florida is a Democratic Republic and not a Banana Republic, the better it will be for all Floridians.”

But Ingoglia defended the proposed legislation in a statement made to Daytona-area’s WESH-TV.

“For years now, leftist activists have been trying to ‘cancel’ people and companies for things they have said or done in the past,” he said. “This includes the removal of statues and memorials, and the renaming of buildings. Using this standard, it would be hypocritical not to cancel the Democrat Party itself for the same reason.”
