Last week, a group of elementary school students in Florida went on a field trip, but not to the local zoo or a museum. Shockingly, the students were taken on a trip to a gay bar.
Sarah Leonardi, a member of the Board of Education for Broward County Schools in South Florida, led a group of children at Wilton Manors Elementary School on a field trip to Rosie’s Bar and Grill. The establishment is well-known in the area for being an unapologetic gay bar, serving explicit-themed menu items such as “sexy Cuban temptress” and a condiment known as “Smack My Cheeks and Make ’em Rosy” sauce.
In an equally disturbing turn of events, the school district backed the decision, claiming that the trip to the lewd restaurant fits in with the educational curriculum:
Wilton Manors Elementary School offers a Unit of Inquiry called, ‘How we organize ourselves.’ In the unit, students learn about neighborhood safety, community helpers, the importance of being a community member, what it takes for a community to be successful, different jobs in a community, and social skills.
The district attempted to further justify the gay bar excursion by saying it was necessary for the students to “learn about the types of jobs involved in operating a restaurant, how to pay for their meal, and how to leave a tip for the service they receive.” They did not comment on why a gay bar was chosen to be the environment for them to learn these skills.
Leonardi shared her support for the move on Twitter after the trip, saying,
I was SO honored to be invited to chaperone @WilsonManorES’s field trip to the incredible Rosie’s! The students and I had a fun walk over and learned a lot about our community!
The concerning field trip caught the attention of prominent conservatives in Florida, including Gov. Ron DeSantis’ press secretary Christina Punshaw. Last week on Twitter, Punshaw pointed out the hypocrisy of the school district by encouraging children to socialize in a sexually perverse environment, while at the same time forcing them to remain masked:
