Israel moving forward with contentious judicial overhaul

Israeli leaders are pushing forward on a controversial judicial system reform after negotiations crumbled.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu put the overhaul on hold earlier this year after the country erupted in mass protests.

He began negotiations with opposition leaders, but those talks blew up last week over two vacancies on the nation’s committee that appoint judges, including to the Supreme Court.

Opposition leaders wanted both seats and said they wouldn’t negotiate until the committee was fully formed. The prime minister now says the opposition was simply stalling.

He said that his government will begin practical steps to overhaul the system.

Meanwhile, protests have now continued for 24 Saturdays in a row. Netanyahu moving forward is expected to add more fuel to the demonstrations.
