Macron criticized for saying Europe should take independent stance on Taiwan

As U.S.-China tensions heat up, French President Emmanuel Macron says Europe needs to pursue strategic autonomy.

Macron made these comments during his three-day visit to China last week. He said “The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and adapt to the American rhythm or a Chinese overreaction.”

The president also said Europe should reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar. Otherwise, they would become “vassals” if tensions between the two superpowers continue to heat up.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio says Macron’s comments might make the U.S. rethink its role in Ukraine.

Australia’s shadow foreign affairs minister also criticized Macron, while accusing China of violating human rights.
