In an off-the-field NFL headline largely overshadowed by the Super Bowl, longtime NFL running back Adrian Peterson was arrested on Sunday on charges of domestic abuse.

ESPN reported that the 36-year-old Peterson was taken into custody on Sunday morning at the Los Angeles International Airport on charges of abuse against his wife. Reports indicate that while on an airplane, the two had an altercation that resulted in Peterson scratching his wife with her diamond wedding ring.

The family attorney revealed that Peterson’s wife will not press charges against her husband, saying,

This is a private misunderstanding between husband and wife and we anticipate it will all be resolved shortly.

Peterson is revered as one of the greatest statistical running backs in NFL history, but his somewhat ignominious past regarding domestic abuse has tarnished his legacy. He sits fifth all-time on the NFL rushing yards list with 14,918 and just completed his 15th season in the league, no small feat for a power runner. His on-the-field resume makes him a possible first-ballot selection to the Hall of Fame when he retires.

On the other hand, this recent arrest is now the second publicized abuse charge against him. In 2014, Peterson pled guilty to domestic abuse of his then-4-year-old son, which reportedly involved using a switch for disciplinary reasons. He missed all of the 2014 season due to probation as a result of the incident.
