Northern border sees increased activity of illegal encounters for both U.S. and Canada

The southern U.S. border isn’t the only region experiencing an immigration crisis.

According to data from Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), the Swanton Sector in Vermont recorded “367 apprehensions and encounters during January of fiscal year 2023 (FY23).”

Although this may not seem like much compared to the thousands seen at the U.S. / Mexico border, CBP says that this number “surpassed the preceding January apprehensions for the past 12 years combined (Total: 344).”

It also represents “an approximate 846% increase in encounters and apprehensions compared to the same period of FY22.”

CBP notes that it has encountered “family groups with young children, including infants, illegally crossing from Canada into the U.S.”

However, migrants aren’t just coming into the U.S. from Canada. In fact, the reverse is now happening in droves as well.

According to an exclusive report by the Daily Caller, those crossing illegally into Canada were encountered in Champlain, New York. The Daily Caller writes that these migrants are using “taxis with ‘frontera,’ or border’ written in Spanish, on them.”

Daily Caller actually rode in these taxis, noting that some of them making “roughly $40 to $50 a person, with some taking advantage of the situation and gouging the price to $80 to $100 a person.”

The passengers either illegally crossed the southern border or falsely claimed to be tourists from the Middle East. Daily Caller found people from Columbia to Nigeria to Pakistan, and other nations in-between, making use of the taxis going to Canada.

A DCNF reporter recorded herself taking one of these taxis up to the Canadian border along with a group of migrants. It shows the migrants loading into a vehicle and disembarking at the border to be let into Canada.

Some of the migrants said they were crossing into Canada for fear of safety and fear of the U.S. borders being eventually closed.

One illegal migrant from Venezuela told the news agency that Canada had “more protection” for women that the U.S. does. Another illegal migrant from Columbia said he was going north because he had heard President Biden “wants to lower opportunities for migrants and those arriving from other countries.”

Others who crossed from the southern border said they were going north because the legal process to stay in the U.S. was too time-consuming and pricey.

A migrant looking to enter Canada only needs an electronic travel authorization which can be purchased for seven Canadian dollars, according to Daily Caller.

President of the National Border Patrol Council for the Swanton sector Sean Walsh told DCNF that a surge of migrants from these areas coming to the northern border has “overwhelmed” agents “with the amount of work that they have to do.”

CBP expresses concern for these migrants as temperatures have dropped and will continue to drop below freezing.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) told DCNF that the blame lies entirely on the shoulders of President Biden.

Joe Biden has left our Northern Border completely exposed due to his failure to secure the Southern Border and forcing our Northern Border patrol to deploy to fight his crisis on the Southern Border. This influx of illegals to New York State has been exacerbated by NYC Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul’s Far Left policies incentivizing illegal immigration, including handing out taxpayer-funded bus tickets to ship illegal immigrants right through my district over the Northern Border. This has allowed illegal immigrants to pour across Upstate New York, which burdens and risks overwhelming the schools, housing, and infrastructure of many of our rural communities. The Biden Administration must address this crisis, as I have been calling on them to do for two years, by securing our borders and supporting our border patrol.
