NYC Mayor wants sanctuary city status revoked

As New York City struggles with a surge of illegal immigrants, Mayor Eric Adams wants to revisit the city’s sanctuary law.

The city became a sanctuary after a 2014 law banned law enforcement from working with federal authorities to arrest illegal immigrants.

But a separate 1976 right-to-shelter law means the city is also required to provide housing for all homeless. This means the city must also provide shelter for the migrants.

Under increasing pressure, Adams now wants to revoke the sanctuary city status.

The Mayor says that around 500 immigrants are arriving daily. He is now bussing migrants into the suburbs. This has resulted in hotels canceling wedding reservations and booting veterans back onto the street.

Adams is also under fire for converting some school gyms into shelters. But the Mayor blames the Biden administration for failing to avert the crisis.

He’s previously called for federal and state funding to help bolster the city’s efforts.
