An Ohio city council made a bold move in the fight for life this week, by approving an ordinance that outlaws abortion.

In a 4 to 3 vote the city of Mason, Ohio has officially become “a sanctuary for the unborn.” The law will take effect on Nov. 24, at which point it will be a criminal offense to aid and abet an abortion within the Mason city limits. A single violation will result in a $2,500 fine and up to a year in prison. The ordinance also prohibits the possession of pregnancy terminating drugs.

Vice Mayor and Council member Mike Gilb said “We should be clear that we don’t support the business of death, that all lives matter, from the moment your heart starts beating to the moment it stops beating.”

He went on to say:

I’m here to protect life. For me it’s a fundamental issue, if the foundations be destroyed what do we have left. I’m not just here to decide how bright the street lights should be or where the next roundabout goes. Those things are certainly important issues but they’re not as fundamental as protecting life.

Mason, Ohio does not have any abortion clinics within the city limits, and supporters of the ordinance are hopeful it will prevent the possibility of any clinics opening in the future.

Earlier this year in May the nearby city of Lebanon become the first city in the state of enact an abortion ban. Several other cities in Ohio are considering enacting similar laws. Including Mason, 41 cities across the country have outlawed abortion thus far.
