Pfizer CEO calls for reversal of Texas court decision banning Mifepristone

The debate surrounding a Texas judge’s decision to overturn FDA approval of mifepristone is heating up.

The decision halts the distribution of abortion pills nationwide. Now, over 300 biotech and pharmaceutical executives are siding with the FDA.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla is one of the signatures on an open letter that says the decision disregards science and undermines the FDA’s authority.

He said: “If courts can overturn drug approvals without regard for science or evidence, or for the complexity required to fully vet the safety and efficacy of new drugs, any medicine is at risk for the same outcome as mifepristone.”

But the plaintiff doctors say the FDA is the one who ignored science.

Alliance Defending Freedom attorney Lathan Watts claims his clients presented safety concerns back in 2000, before the drug’s approval. The FDA violated their own rules by not providing a response.

In 2020 the FDA linked the abortion drug to at least 28 deaths and over 4,000 major health complications.
