NY bill would allow unstable male inmates to transfer to women’s prison

Earlier this week, the New York State senate proposed a law that would allow mentally ill male convicts to transfer to female prisons based on their preferred “gender identity,” according to a report from The Daily Wire.

Not surprisingly, many are gravely concerned that this would put female inmates at serious risk for sexual exploitation and abuse.

An addition to the state’s Senate Bill 2860, this proposal would allow any mentally ill inmate to appeal their “preferred gender identity” which would then force prisons to place them in a correctional facility that matches their preferred gender. This would place male and female prisoners together.

Amanda Stulman, an advocate for gender separation in American prison systems, described the proposed bill this way:

The Bill expands beyond correctional facilities to extend to ‘other institutions’ housing incarcerated individuals. Presumably, this would include forensic mental health facilities. So, this New York Senate Bill would, presumptively, house mentally ill incarcerated men with mentally ill women … As with the laws and policies of many other jurisdictions, the provisions of this proposed New York Bill permit any inmate, at any time, making no modifications to their body or presentation, to claim a ‘gender identity’ which requires a correctional system to place them in cross-sex housing.

Stulman added that this bill would actually be in violation of a portion of a previous human rights ruling from the United Nations known as the “Mandela Rules,’ which reads,

Men and women shall so far as possible be detained in separate institutions; in an institution which receives both men and women, the whole of the premises allocated to women shall be entirely separate.

The bill has not passed into law yet, as it is awaiting a potential voting date.

Author’s Biblical Analysis

Hopefully, as a Christian, this report raises multiple alarm bells in your soul.

There is much at play here that should enrage Christians. First, we see the devastating effects of perversion giving birth to destruction. In a sinful effort to force an “inclusive” LGBTQ agenda on prison systems, the sexual revolution is now sacrificing the safety of female inmates, so that male prisoners can freely “alter” their “gender identity.”

Furthermore, we see the dignity of female prisoners slain in the street.

It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that putting male inmates, many of whom are suffering from mental instability, in the same prisons as female prisoners is an utterly foolish idea. We can also assume a portion of these inmates were initially locked up for some kind of sexual crime. Putting sexually deviant and mentally unstable criminals in the same facility as females is a recipe for countless instances of assault and abuse.

The biblical lesson from the report reveals to us the importance to protect the vulnerable and to defend the cause of the weak.

Some will argue that the female prisoners at risk in this situation have forfeited their right to be protected, since they themselves are also prisoners. I believe Christians should think differently.

Not only are the female prisoners made in the image of God, but they are also counted among “the least of these.” Should we not, as our Lord modeled for us, take great care to show sacrificial love for those who are most vulnerable?

Many of us would not be able to stand up for these vulnerable prisoners, but the lesson applies to us still. May we, as Christians, always seek to defend the cause of the weak, knowing ultimately that our Lord had done this for us while we were still weak.

Open your mouth for the speechless, in the cause of all who are appointed to die. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.  – Proverbs 31:8-9
