Liberal Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor did not recuse herself from multiple copyrights cases relating to Penguin Random House even after she received millions for her books with the publisher, according to a report from the Daily Wire.

Per the report, “In 2010, [Sotomayor] got a $1.2 million book advance from Knopf Doubleday Group, a part of the conglomerate.” Two years later in 2012, she received “two advance payments from the publisher totaling $1.9 million.”

From 2017 to at least 2021, the justice received annual payments from Penguin Random House that amounted to over $500,000. “In all, she received $3.6 million from Penguin Random House or its subsidiaries,” the Daily Wire reports after reviewing financial disclosures.

While receiving these payments Sotomayor did not recuse herself from cases with the publisher on multiple occasions.

In 2013 the Sotomayor voted on whether or not the Supreme Court should take up the case Aaron Greenspan v. Random House, even though then-Justice Stephen Breyer recused himself for receiving money from the publisher.

Then in 2020, the court chose not to hear a separate case involving the publisher. Again Breyer recused himself, while Sotomayor did not, although it’s not known how she voted in the decision.

The report comes as Democratic lawmakers accuse Justice Clarence Thomas of being compromised for taking lavish gifts from wealthy Republican donor, Harlan Crow.

In addition, the left is criticizing Justice Neil Gorsuch for selling property to the head of a major law firm that’s had cases before the Supreme Court.
