Sec. Blinken: Ukraine has retaken half of occupied territories

As the war in Ukraine stretches into its 17th month, Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters that Ukraine has retaken much of the territory Russia had initially conquered.

His comments mark the first time an American official has claimed Ukraine has retaken this much the territory invaded by Russia. Blinken further said that the Ukrainian counteroffensive will likely take several more months due to slowed progress from Russian munitions and minefields.

The news comes as Russia accuses Ukraine of launching new drone attacks. Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that a drone attacked two buildings near the headquarters of Russia’s defense ministry on Monday, but that no casualties were reported.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted an increase in drone attacks and told reporters that Russia would be implementing a 24-hour air-defense system in response.
