Sen. Tuberville continues block of Pentagon nominees

The Marine Corps is without a confirmed leader for the first time in over 160 years as one GOP senator continues his effort to block Pentagon nominees for the position.

Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville began blocking nominees in March to protest the DOD’s new abortion policy. The policy covers the costs for servicewomen to get an abortion.

Tuberville’s protest has continued even as Marine Corps Commandment Gen. David Berger officially retired Monday. His acting replacement is waiting to be confirmed in the Senate.

Tuberville’s effort is drawing bipartisan frustration as the DOD, congressional colleagues, and now the White House is saying the block risks national security.

But Tuberville responded, saying his block does not affect national security and that he will not back down.
