The most popular American athlete of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and one of the best gymnasts in the world is hurt, according to a report from ESPN on Tuesday.  24-year-old Simone Biles, captain of Team USA Women’s Gymnastics in Tokyo, suffered an injury on the vault during the team competition early Tuesday that will force her to miss the finals of that competition.  It is listed as a vague “medical issue.”

Biles was looking to match or exceed her outstanding 5-medal performance in the Rio Games in 2016, but this could be a major setback.  There is no word yet on whether she will be able to compete in any of the later events for which she was scheduled.

Team USA issued a statement saying,

Simone has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue. She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions.

At 24, it is likely this could be Biles’ final Olympic Games.  Hopefully, the beloved gymnast will recover in time to add one more gold to an already illustrious career, especially if Tokyo is her swan song.
