State-by-state Freedom Index rankings released

A new report shows that the majority of states in the U.S. aren’t protecting religious freedom for faith-based organizations.

Napa Legal Institute released the first Faith and Freedom Index two days ago. Using 14 categories, analysts scored states on how well they allow for religious freedom. But only six states ranked above 60% for religious freedom.

The law firm’s executive director Mary Margaret Beecher said Alabama received the top mark for protecting religious freedom with an 86% score.

Texas followed next at 70%, while Nevada and Maryland were at the bottom with scores of 18% and 20%. The index says these two states provide weak and ambiguous protections for religious nonprofits.
