Tennessee House Republicans have formally requested that Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville stop performing “surgical mutilations” on minors.
On Wednesday, members of the Tennessee State House of Representatives sent a letter to the hospital expressing concern about Vanderbilt’s policies on pediatric transgender surgeries.
In the letter, signed by 62 House members, the representatives explained that they “are alarmed by recent reports from the Daily Wire detailing the surgical mutilations of minor children at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC).”
Additionally, the representatives explained that they “are appalled [by] reports [that] demonstrate threats by Vanderbilt personnel to take adverse actions against employees who are conscientious and religious objectors to genital disfiguring and double mastectomies of children.”
The letter proceeded to formally call on Vanderbilt Medical to cease “gender transitioning surgeries” on minors and stated that Tennessee lawmakers would consider the next steps based on the hospital’s response to their request.
The legislators’ letter is in response to an investigation into gender reassignment surgeries and medical treatments for minors at Vanderbilt Medical Center.
A video obtained by Matt Walsh, a conservative political commentator, shows a plastic surgeon who works for Vanderbilt explaining that they are able to provide mastectomies for 16 and 17-year-old girls.

In another video obtained by Walsh, Dr. Shayne Taylor, a Vanderbilt physician affiliated with the adult transgender department, was recorded speaking about the massive amounts of money to be made from performing gender reassignment surgeries.
According to the Daily Wire, “Taylor noted that a ‘chest reconstruction’ can bring in $40,000 per patient, and someone ‘just on routine hormone treatment, who [she’s] only seeing a few times a year, can bring in several thousand dollars … and actually makes money for the hospital.’”
Surgery, and all of its permanence aside, cross-sex hormone usage carries the potential for irreversible damage. According to the Mayo Clinic, for individuals on feminizing hormones, complications include cardiovascular disease and stroke, and “the risk of permanent infertility increases with long-term use of hormones, especially when hormone therapy is initiated before puberty.” Additionally, risks for “masculinizing hormone therapy can affect your fertility and sexual function and cause other health problems.”
The Daily Wire reported that “Republican Tennessee Governor Bill Lee’s office … is in contact with the state’s top lawmakers about potential legislation” that would effectively stop irreversible medical treatments for minors.
