Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is now permanently banned from using her verified personal Twitter account over the company’s COVID-19 misinformation policy

“We permanently suspended Marjorie Taylor Greene for repeated violations of our COVID-19 misinformation policy,” Twitter said in a statement. “We’ve been clear that, per our strike system for this policy, we will permanently suspend accounts for repeated violations of the policy.”

Following Twitter’s announcement, the outspoken Georgia lawmaker issued a fiery response on the conservative social media platform GETTR:

When Maxine Waters can go to the streets and threaten violence on Twitter, Kamala and Ilhan can bail out rioters on Twitter, and Chief spokesman for terrorist IRGC can tweet mourning Soleimani but I get suspended for tweeting VAERS statistics, Twitter is an enemy to America and can’t handle the truth. That’s fine, I’ll show America we don’t need them and it’s time to defeat our enemies.”

While Twitter did not specify what, specifically, Greene posted to merit the ban, Rolling Stone reported that she sent out a Saturday tweet, which can no longer be accessed, about what she called an “extremely high amount of covid vaccine deaths” that are being “ignored.”

Twitter implemented its “COVID-19 misleading information policy” in December based on a system of strikes in which repeat violators face “permanent suspension.” The company encourages users to report anyone who posts misleading content, with the added option of “flagging” tweets as such.

Greene has been the subject of repeated temporary account suspensions over similar “misinformation” accusations. Most recently, she was suspended for one week and threatened with a permanent ban for stating that “vaccines are failing & do not reduce the spread of the virus & neither do masks.” Her account was temporarily blocked in January over a tweet in which she made accusations of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

The conservative firebrand is the first member of Congress to be permanently banned from the social media platform, though not the first U.S. elected official. Twitter permanently suspended former President Donald Trump’s account last year in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, citing “severe violations of our Civic Integrity policy.”

News of Greene’s suspension sparked a multitude of responses on social media ranging from approbation to accusations of censorship.

On Monday, Greene also revealed that Facebook had joined Twitter in censoring her for 24 hours for posting something that violated the social platform’s “Community Standards.” Greene again responded on GETTR, saying, “When Big Tech decides what political speech of elected Members is accepted and what’s not then they are working against our government and against the interest of our people.”

Greene’s professional account (@RepMGT) remains active at this time.
