The U.S. Embassy in Ukraine is encouraging American citizens to leave the country, announcing that the Poland/Ukraine border is open to Americans, but only if they have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

The Embassy warns that the situation in Ukraine “continues to be unpredictable due to the increased threats of Russian military action and can deteriorate with little notice, “and for this reason has announced that “U.S. citizens in Ukraine should depart immediately using commercial or other privately available transportation options.”

However, the Embassy notes in their message to U.S. citizens that “citizens must present a valid U.S. passport and proof of COVID-19 vaccination,” in order to cross the border. “Travelers are also encouraged to present a negative test result from a PCR or antigen COVID-19 test, which will facilitate entry into Poland,” the statement added.

The message further warned Americans in Ukraine that “the U.S. government will not be able to evacuate U.S. citizens in the event of Russian military action anywhere in Ukraine.”

It is unclear if the vaccine requirement for Americans fleeing Ukraine is a policy of the Embassy or the Polish government.

According to the Polish government’s website, unvaccinated individuals may enter the country, but will be subject to a mandatory quarantine. Likewise, those who fail to present a negative COVID-19 test will be subject to quarantine regardless of vaccination status.

Travelers who have recovered from COVID-19 “no later than 6 months before the date of crossing the border of the Republic of Poland,” will not be subject to quarantine if they present proper documentation confirming their recovery.
