A list of new laws: Crime and minimum wage

Some of the new laws that went into effect at the start of 2024 were focused on the crime and economy.

First, the minimum wage rose in 22 states as of January 1. Some of these wages go as high as $15 per hour in states like New York, Maryland, and New Mexico. Other states, like Ohio and South Dakota, hover in the $10 to $11 range, but cite inflation as their reason for increase.

Three more states and Washington, D.C., will raise wages later this year.

Meanwhile, some states enacted new bail and probation reforms while others focused on crackdowns in the areas of retail theft and sex trafficking. But one of the bigger laws comes out of California and deals with the Second Amendment. According to this new law, California now forbids people to carry firearms in most public places.

A federal appeals court allowed the law to go into effect even as it faces a legal battle in the court of appeals in February.
