A Moment in History: Ladder 118

by ian

The darkest day of American history – September 11th, 2001 – saw almost 3,000 American citizens killed at the hands of Islamic terrorists. The majority of these were everyday civilians, but 343 of them were firefighters. These heroes would come to symbolize the best of American courage and sacrifice. That day, one particular group of FDNY heroes would become immortalized in a photo taken of the twin towers burning from across the East River in Brooklyn. While the towers burned in the background, an FDNY fire engine – Ladder 118 – was captured in the foreground barreling across the Brooklyn Bridge to get to the World Trade Center complex and save as many lives as possible before the towers would inevitably collapse.
