Abortion to be on ballot in Arizona and Missouri

by ian

The issue of abortion will be making an appearance on some ballots in the upcoming 2024 contest.

Petitions to place abortion coverage on the ballot were recently approved for the states of Missouri and Arizona. Both ballot measures would amend their state’s constitutions to allow and enshrine the ability to acquire abortions.

Missouri currently has a near-total ban on the procedure. The petition to put abortion on the ballot in the state required at least 170,000 signatures from six out of eight congressional districts.

The ballot measure would remove the current restrictions on the procedure but would allow abortion restrictions after fetal viability – usually around the 22nd or 23rd week, with some exceptions.

Arizona, meanwhile, currently bans the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy. That petition required at least 383,923 signatures – and fetched more than twice that amount.
