An Alaska man was charged this week with threatening Supreme Court justices and their family members.
Panos Anastasiou, 76, was arrested and charged with nine counts of threatening a federal judge and 13 counts of threatening interstate commerce. Anastasiou stands out among other similar cases due to the large number of threatening messages he sent to federal judges between March 2023 and July 2024.
The Supreme Court received a total of 465 messages during that time which included messages that were racist, crude, violent, and homophobic, according to the indictment. In addition, the messages contained threats of assassination and torture.
Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement that Anastasiou’s threats are a danger to the fabric of democracy by trying to instill fear in judges.
