All Cards on the Table, All Hands on Deck: DNC ends with flurry

Whether or not one agrees with Democrats or supports Kamala Harris for president, it would be hard for anyone not to marvel at the lengths to which the left went in trying to swing the election squarely to their side this week.

In their all-out rush to keep Donald Trump out of the White House, a desire that seems to be equal to if not greater than the party’s enthusiasm for Harris, Democrats marched out a who’s who of celebrities, party big whigs and a handful of former Republicans who, at least for the moment, were heralded as major players from the right.

In reality, it was former Illinois Congressman Adam Kinzinger and a group of people who most Americans would not know by name or face.

But, to be sure, Democrats have no equal when it comes to the ability to create a star-studded affair. No less than Oprah Winfrey, John Legend, Stevie Wonder, both Obamas and Bill Clinton took turns endorsing Harris and often mocking former President Trump.

Indeed, it was the mockery of Trump that took center stage throughout the DNC. There were mentions of policy points and worldviews, but insulting Trump was the main event.

“President Joe Biden’s approach was to persuade the electorate that Donald Trump is a national menace,” NBC News’ Peter Nicholas observed. “Kamala Harris is instead casting him as Dennis the Menace.”

Harris largely kept it serious during her acceptance speech. Perhaps she found that having every major Democrat fill most of a workweek dogging Trump was sufficient.

Thursday night became more of a return to casting Trump as an arch-threat to the country.

“In many ways, Donald Trump is an unserious man, but the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious,” Harris said.

She later continued, “Donald Trump tried to throw away your votes. When he failed, he sent an armed mob to the United States Capitol where they assaulted law enforcement officers. When politicians in his own party begged him to call off the mob and send help, he did the opposite. He fanned the flames.”

Harris dedicated substantial time to the topic of abortion, which she said is under attack and could be eradicated if Trump were reelected.

“As a part of his agenda, he and his allies would limit access to birth control, than medication abortion and enact a nationwide abortion ban with or without Congress,” Harris said. “Simply put: They are out of their minds.”

Another of Harris’ major talking points was immigration, one of the areas in which Republicans hold a massive advantage in public polling. Her solution is to revive the border security bill that was tanked in the House earlier this year, largely because of pressure from Trump.

“I refuse to play politics with our security,” Harris said. “And here is my pledge to you: As president, I will bring back the bipartisan border security bill that he killed and I will sign it into law,” Harris said. “I know we can live up to our proud heritage as a nation of immigrants and reform our broken immigration system. We can create an earned pathway to citizenship and secure our border.”

TRUMP FIRES BACK IN REAL-TIME

Trump, ever adept at drawing a crowd, spent Thursday evening reacting live to Harris on Truth Social.

To call the former president a prolific poster would be a vast understatement, but the series of comments he made toward the end of Harris’ speech generally summarize the spirit of his argument.

“She’s done nothing for three and a half years but talk, and that’s what she’s doing tonight, she’s complaining about everything but doing nothing!” Trump wrote, uncharacteristically in standard sentence case rather than all-caps. “She should leave the Speech right now, go to Washington, D.C., close the Border, allow fracking in Pennsylvania and other places, and start doing the things she’s complaining about aren’t done!”

Trump might have criticized Harris for being all talk, but he focused much of his criticism on what she did not say.

“She talks about Compassion, but doesn’t talk about all of the people she’s allowed into our Country,” Trump wrote before reverting to all-caps, “43% INCREASE IN VIOLENT CRIME NATIONWIDE, 60% INCREASE IN RAPE, SINCE SHE’S BEEN BORDER CZAR. CRIME HAS GONE THROUGH THE ROOF. SHE CHEATED ON JOBS, 818,000, TO MAKE OUR COUNTRY LOOK LIKE IT’S THRIVING. INFLATION IS KILLING US!”

Trump concluded by accusing Harris of being complicit in making the U.S. a “failing nation” and quipped, “There will be no future under Comrade Kamala Harris, because she will take us into a Nuclear World War III! She will never be respected by the Tyrants of the World!”

PALESTINE STILL LOOMS LARGE

Just as the effectiveness of Democrats’ new mock Trump strategy is yet to be determined, it remains to be seen what effect, if any, the Harris campaign’s stance on Gaza will have on the election.

While Republicans might have found any number of points on which to object to Harris’ views, legacy media and the left-leaning press fixated on Demomcrats’ decision to essentially ice pro-Palestine activists’ voices this week.

Everyone from the Squad to the United Auto Workers agitated for a pro-Palestinian speaker to be given the stage.

“If we want the war in Gaza to end, we can’t put our heads in the sand or ignore the voices of the Palestinian Americans in the Democratic Party,” the full UAW statement read. “If we want peace, if we want real democracy, and if we want to win this election, the Democratic Party must allow a Palestinian American speaker to be heard from the DNC stage tonight.”

Democrat leadership – hoping to avoid controversy, and most assuredly wanting to appeal to the large Jewish population in its voting base – opted to steer far away from Gaza and focus on Harris’ promises to be a president for “all Americans”.

The result of this move in the short term was a pro-Palestine sit-in attended by thousands and angry statements from the far left.

NPR quoted one speaker at the sit-in as calling Harris “Killer Kamala.”

Harris clearly appreciated the precarious position in which she finds herself – trying as she is to appeal equally to the pro-Palestine and Israel crowds. She dedicated significant time to the Gaza War and attempted to reach both sides.

“President Biden and I are working around the clock, because now is the time to get a hostage deal and a ceasefire deal done. And let me be clear: I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself, and I will always ensure Israel has the ability to defend itself, because the people of Israel must never again face the horror that a terrorist organization called Hamas caused on October 7, including unspeakable sexual violence, and the massacre of young people at a music festival.”

She lated added, “what has happened in Gaza over the past 10 months is devastating. So many innocent lives lost. Desperate, hungry people fleeing for safety over and over again. The scale of suffering is heartbreaking. President Biden and I are working to end this war, such that Israel is secure, the hostages are released, the suffering in Gaza ends, and the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity, security, freedom, and self-determination.”
