American college instructors stabbed in China

In China, four American teachers were wounded in a stabbing attack this week.

The assaults occurred at a park in the northeastern Chinese city of Jilin. A 55-year-old local man was detained the same day, and police said he bumped into “a foreigner” before beginning his stabbing spree. A tourist who tried to stop the assailant was also injured in the attack.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said police believe it was a random attack but authorities were still investigating. They also said the incident would not have any negative effects on Chinese-American relations. The U.S. State Department is in touch with local authorities and monitoring the situation.

The four exchange teachers are from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. None of their injuries were considered life-threatening.
