The American Red Cross says there’s an emergency shortage of blood. The group says donations are at a 23-year low and hospitals are running short on supply.
The Red Cross says the shortage can have deadly effects as lifesaving blood is needed following accidents, during surgeries, and in treatments for some conditions.
When a hospital has a low stock, it can cause delays for patients with rare blood types or can force doctors to pick and choose who gets transfusions. It’s estimated an extra 8,000 donations are needed every week this month to match the current needs.
