Baltimore bridge collapses after support column struck by ship

Early this morning, the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed after it was struck by a cargo ship – sending cars and people plunging into the river below.

Authorities have described the scene as a ” mass casualty incident.” As of this afternoon, two people have been rescued, but at least six others are still missing.

The ship has been identified as belonging to Danish shipping company Maersk. The company put out a statement saying it was ” horrified” by what happened.

It’s still not fully clear what went wrong, but video shows the ship’s lights going out moments before the accident. Officials say the ship had issued a mayday and was having issues with its power.

Baltimore’s Police Chief said there’s no indication the collapse was an act of terrorism or that it was done on purpose.
