Weeks of violent and deadly protests in Bangladesh have resulted in the resignation of its prime minister.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina tendered her resignation, according to a televised announcement from the Bangladesh army chief – who also said an interim government would be formed.
Protesters stormed and looted the presidential residence following Hasina’s departure. Another group of protesters were seen chiseling the statue of Bangladesh’s previous ruler – who is also Hasina’s father.
What began as student protests against job quotas swelled into accusations of preferential occupational treatment to members of Hasina’s political party. The violent protests have resulted in 250 deaths and thousands more injured.
