Biden administration unveils changes to asylum process

The Biden administration is reportedly looking to change the process for asylum seekers.

Yesterday, the Department of Homeland Security announced a new proposal to expedite the process. This proposal would allow asylum officers to determine earlier if an asylum seeker is a national security risk.

Right now, that part of the process is later in the proceedings. One DHS official told ABC News that the changes would only affect individuals who have a serious criminal history or terrorist activity.

This happens as the Biden administration has faced increased pressure to tamp down on the border crisis as a whole. For example, recent reports show that the backlog of asylum seekers looking for entry into the U.S. has reached 8 million.

This marks an increase of about 167% within five years. It shockingly also represented a 1.9 million increase from the year prior.
