President Joe Biden and China’s Xi Jinping spoke for the first time in months yesterday – discussing everything from Taiwan to TikTok. The nearly two-hour phone call was the first conversation between the two leaders since November. The White House described their conversation as “candid and constructive.”

Xi reportedly told Biden that the two “should prioritize stability” and “not provoke troubles, ” while threatening the U.S. not to interfere with Taiwan – calling it the “first red line not to be crossed.” President Biden raised concerns about TikTok while underscoring American efforts to divest the social media platform from China.

The call comes as top White House officials – such as Secretary of State Antony Blinken – are set to visit China in the coming weeks.
