Biden border actions ‘too little, too late,’ Johnson says

President Joe Biden is taking action to tackle the border crisis. Today he’s signing an executive order that would temporarily close the border following illegal crossings exceeding an average of 2,500 per day. The border will reopen once crossings fall below 1,500.

Republicans have been urging Biden to take action on the border for some time. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) says Biden’s executive order was done primarily with the election in mind. That’s a sentiment also shared by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).

Biden’s actions largely mirror the Senate’s bipartisan border bill that was previously struck down by Republicans, who said it would enshrine many of the current problems into law.
