President Joe Biden continues courting votes ahead of the 2024 election as he campaigns across the U.S.
On Monday, the president stopped at Mother Emanuel AME Church in South Carolina, where he spoke from the pulpit to a mostly black audience. Back in 2015, the church was rocker after avowed white supremacist Dylann Roof shot nine black parishioners after they had invited him to their Bible study.
Given the history of the site, much of Biden’s speech focused on denouncing white supremacy as a “poison” in America.
Biden’s speech also turned to former President Donald Trump and the Make America Great Again movement. Biden compared Trump’s remarks about the 2020 election being stolen to the defeated Confederacy in the Civil War.
Biden also repeated rhetoric about Trump being a “threat to democracy” and ended his rant by calling Trump “a loser.”
But Biden’s speech was also interrupted by a gaggle of protesters calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Those in the church responded with a chant in support of Biden, saying “Four More Years.” Biden responded to the protesters, saying he was working with the Israeli government on a strategy to have them “significantly get out of Gaza.”
