President Joe Biden has issued an executive order targeting Israeli settlers in the West Bank accused of attacking Palestinians. The order put sanctions and visa bans on four Israeli settlers and could apply to others in the future.
The White House fears violence in the West Bank could undermine Biden’s hopes for a two-state solution in the region. It’s also meant to reinforce dozens of travel bans imposed by the U.S. in December.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the sanctions are unnecessary, saying, “Israel takes action against all law-breakers everywhere, and therefore there is no need for unusual measures on the issue.”
