British authorities have arrested more than 1,000 people following days of violent anti-immigrant riots and counter-riots sparked by the horrific killing of three young girls late last month.
The riots were largely sparked by social media posts falsely blaming the murders on a Muslim asylum-seeker, when in reality the suspected killer was born in Wales. The posts came as many Britons feel overwhelmed by the number of migrants in their country.
As a result, the UK government is looking to crack down on online speech it believes could further fuel the riots.
British Met Police Commissioner Mark Rowley suggested he was willing to arrest American citizens, like Elon Musk, over their controversial posts. The UK government issued a warning last week, saying “Think before you post,” and warning “You can be prosecuted for posting material online which incites violence or hatred.”
