The California state legislature this week passed a law banning local governments from requiring voter ID in their elections.
The law comes in response to moves by the City of Huntington Beach to require voter IDs for local elections starting in 2026. Democrat State Senator Dave Min, who authored this week’s bill, claims that voter ID laws only “subvert voter turnout and create barriers to law abiding voters.”
He said, “To register to vote in California, voters are already required to provide their driver’s license number, California identification number, or the last four digits of their social security number.”
Republicans tried to introduce an amendment explicitly banning illegal immigrants from voting, as they are still able to secure state ID numbers. However, that amendment failed to pass.
