Catholic school student punished for referring to God as “He”

Several weeks ago, a student at a Catholic school was punished on an assignment by a professor who took offense to the student’s use of male pronouns when referring to God.

The anonymous student attends Loyola Marymount College, a Catholic institution that entered controversial waters last year when it hosted an event in support of Planned Parenthood. Cecilia González-Andrieu is a professor at the school, and she reportedly forced the student to resubmit an assignment because the student referred to God multiple times as “He” in the assignment.

The student argued that the Bible refers to God as “He,” and as an institution that claims to uphold the Bible’s authority, this should not even be an issue. The student said,

Your comment that I referred to God as a male, I should not have gotten any points off for that. MULTIPLE times throughout the Bible God is referred to as a ‘he.’ I feel targeted by your comment, as I was raised in the church with the belief that God is a male.

Since this took place in December, the student resubmitted the paper. Will Donahue, chairman of the California College Republicans and Loyola Marymount University College Republicans president, said,

(This student) should never have been in that situation…I am appalled by this blatant heresy coming out of the theology department. This was a personal attack on one of my member’s freedom of religion, at a ‘Catholic’ school no less. This type of compelled speech cannot be tolerated by LMU.
