CBP temporarily suspends rail operations at southern border

US Customs and Border Protection is suspending all railway operations at the southern border due to a surge in illegal crossings.

The CBP closed international railway bridges in two Texas cities today, saying this will free more agents to process migrants. Over the past two weeks, border agents reported encountering up to 10,000 migrants in a single day.

Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens told CNN that cartels use migrants as a diversion to smuggle in fentanyl, cash, and criminals.

The closed port of entry at Lukeville, Arizona, is hurting the local tourism economy. Arizona Democrat Gov. Katie Hobbs called out her party for not doing enough and demanded the federal government reimburse Arizona for border security expenses.
