Concerns for public schooling mount amid dismal grade reports

It looks like teachers have their work cut out for them this fall as last year’s grades leave a lot to be desired.

According to Washington’s latest K-12 Report Card, only 50% of the state’s public schools are considered at grade level in English, and less than half are on track in math and science.

In Illinois, a recent study from the University of Illinois System found that “only about one-fourth of all public-school students are back to pre-pandemic performance levels in English language arts while even fewer have returned to pre-pandemic levels in math.”

The problem is compounded by the fact that Chicago teachers are being told to give passing grades to migrant students, regardless of their performance. Teachers told a local radio show, “They were instructed by school administrators to give their migrant students a 70 percent in every subject and pass them onto the next grade.”

They said this was even the case when students “displayed severe academic deficiencies.”
