Congress reconvenes amid rising tension

Congress is back in session today with a busy schedule and rising tension.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is under intense pressure to approve more aid for Ukraine as Russia repeatedly bombards the U.S. ally. The House has failed to pass standalone aid for weeks, which makes it a key priority. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is pushing House Republicans to pass the national security omnibus instead.

But Johnson already faces a motion to remove him from the speaker’s chair after working to pass a bipartisan spending bill last month. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is leading that motion and says Johnson broke his promises to voters.

In the Senate, Schumer must decide how to respond to the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Democrats are expected to take the unprecedented action of dismissing the articles without a trial. Senate Republicans say that’s unacceptable.
