Conservatives split on IVF after Alabama ruling

Conservatives are struggling to get on the same page with Alabama’s IVF ruling.

Last week, the state Supreme Court found that frozen embryos are legally children under state law, making it illegal to destroy them – something that often happens with unused embryos. Several clinics have already stopped IVF treatments to avoid prosecution. Former President Donald Trump is urging Alabama to preserve IVF in the state.

But there’s division on the issue. Pro-life activist Lila Rose of Live Action called Trump’s comments disappointing. She told the Washington Post, “Children are a gift. Tragically, IVF turns them into a product to be created, sold, and destroyed.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said he largely agrees with Trump but acknowledged there are ethical questions that need to be considered.

Democrats are likely to use the issue as a major talking point for the 2024 election. President Joe Biden called the Alabama ruling a “direct result of the overturning of Roe v. Wade,” while Senate Democrats are looking to pass a bill federally protecting IVF procedures.
