Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin hospitalized again

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was rushed to the hospital yesterday, less than a month after his previous secret hospitalization.

Austin was admitted to the critical care unit Monday afternoon for symptoms of an “emergent” bladder issue. He soon transferred his authority to Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks. And, unlike his Jan. 1 hospitalization, the secretary immediately notified the White House, Congress and Pentagon officials.

Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder gave an update on Austin’s condition, reading a statement issued by the medical staff that saw to the defense secretary’s care.

Austin was scheduled to meet with key allies in Europe tomorrow concerning aid to Ukraine, but that trip has now been canceled. He will instead meet with other leaders virtually, depending on his recovery status.
