DOJ sues LiveNation over alleged antritrust breach

The Department of Justice is suing the ticketing giant LiveNation over antitrust issues.

Following LiveNation’s acquisition of Ticketmaster, the DOJ accused the company of monopolizing live ticketing. The department also alleged that LiveNation’s actions “freeze innovation and bend the industry to their own benefit.” The DOJ wants to break up the company to protect consumers and competitors.

The lawsuit says LiveNation alone controls about 60% of concert promotions at major venues, while it controls 80% or more of major concert venues’ primary ticketing.”

LiveNation responded by saying the DOJ doesn’t understand how entertainment economics works. They said the department ignores “the fact that the bulk of service fees go to venues, and that competition has steadily eroded Ticketmaster’s market share and profit margin.”
