Dozens of US citizens safely escape Haiti

The first charter flight carrying Americans out of Haiti has landed safely in the United States.

More than 30 US citizens landed in Miami yesterday as the government continues to urge Americans to leave the country. Haiti’s main airport in the capital of Port Au Prince is currently closed due to ongoing gang violence.

As a result, the State Department announced on Saturday limited flights out of the northern part of the country, about 130 miles from the capital. But those who wished to leave were provided no transportation and had to travel to the airport on their own.

The flight comes as U.S. military forces were flown into the capitol last week to protect the American embassy amid the escalating violence.
