Drug overdose deaths fall from last year

by ian

Drug overdose deaths have fallen to a five-year low.

New federal data reports that 3% fewer people died from a drug overdose last year compared to the year prior. This means that roughly 4,000 less people died from an overdose in 2023 compared to 2022. The number of deaths is still quite high though, at about 107,500 people.

But Dr. Susan Sherman, professor of behavior and society, says she’s encouraged to see the numbers trending downward. Opioid deaths have also fallen by roughly 3,000 this past year. The CDC reports that most drug-related deaths came from fentanyl.

At the same time, other drug-related deaths decreased in Indiana, Kansas, Maine and Nebraska. But they increased in Alaska, Oregon and Washington.
