Newly released emails from December 2015 reveal that then-Vice President Joe Biden’s office colluded with the legacy media and Hunter Biden’s business associate to squash stories about Hunter’s business arrangement with Ukrainian gas company Burisma.
America First Legal, a nonprofit public interest law firm, acquired the emails last week through litigation. The published emails primarily show a lengthy December 2015 exchange between Eric Schwerin, Hunter’s business associate who made at least 27 visits to the White House during the Obama/Biden presidency, and Kate Bedingfield, then the communications director for Vice President Biden who served in the same role in the Biden White House until March 1 of this year.
Stephen Miller, the president of America First Legal, said the emails show the legacy media has helped squash stories revealing Hunter and Joe’s collusion in foreign business deals for years.
“Joe Biden and the Biden vice presidency were intimately involved in the Hunter Biden Burisma affair,” Miller said on the Thursday edition of the “Just the News, No Noise” TV show. “They were intimately aware of it. They were intimately aware of the ethical objections, and they were intimately involved in trying to spin and control the press about it.”
In the exchange, Schwerin and Bedingfield coordinate how Vice President Biden’s office was handling the media and discouraging reporters from publishing information about Hunter’s ties to Burisma during Joe Biden’s visit to Ukraine in December 2015.
At the time, Vice President Biden was the Obama administration’s point man on handling relations with Ukraine. In particular, Biden was leading the U.S. response to numerous claims of corruption in Ukraine, including criminal investigations in Ukraine, the U.K., and the U.S. that involved Mykola Zlochevsky, Burisma’s owner.
A COORDINATED RESPONSE
As reporters began to ask questions about Hunter’s business interests that clearly conflicted with his father’s supposed role in Ukraine, Schwerin and Bedingfield began coordinating the Biden family’s media response via email.
The emails (which can be read in their entirety here) directly contradict the Biden administration’s repeated claims that Joe has nothing to do with Hunter’s business deals. In fact, the emails show that Schwerin and Bedingfield worked together to squash the story at the behest of Joe Biden when reporters started asking about Hunter’s involvement with Burisma.
After receiving a similarly written response suggested by Schwerin, Bedingfield responded:
VP [Joe Biden] signed off on this — will give this quote to both reporters in my name shortly:
‘Hunter Biden is a private citizen and a lawyer. The Vice President does not endorse any particular company and has no involvement with this company. The Vice President has pushed aggressively for years — both publicly with groups like the US-Ukraine Business Forum and privately in meetings in with Ukrainian leaders — for Ukraine to make every effort to investigate and prosecute corruption in accordance with the rule of law. It will once again be a key focus during his trip this week.’”
In his responding email, Schwerin showed just how closely Hunter’s business associate and Joe’s director of communication were working to form the narrative.
“Thanks. I notice one typo FYI. ‘in meeting in with Ukrainian leaders.” Probably want to lose the second “in.” Sure you caught that – just in case,” Schwerin responded.
MEDIA COLLUSION
The emails also reveal how members of the legacy media agreed to at least attempt to not publish information about Hunter’s Burisma connections.
Bedingfield wrote that one Bloomberg reporter had asked about the connection, but said that she was doing “everything she could” to not include the information in her story. Schwerin suggested Bedingfield further push the reporter to not use the information.
“I would just urge her (as I know you are doing) that there is no new news there. And even if she uses it — she should avoid getting into past stories (Navy, etc.) that have nothing to do with this,” Schwerin wrote.
Bedingfield agreed.
“Absolutely — we have had two conversations about it — she will only use if her editors hold a gun to her head,” Bedingfield wrote.
GROWING PHYSICAL EVIDENCE
The emails come as yet another physical piece of evidence showing the Biden family’s extensive foreign business deals that Republicans say are nothing more than influence peddling. That is, Joe Biden’s family has allegedly been making millions of dollars from foreign businesses in exchange for access to Joe Biden.
Last week, House Oversight Committee chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) said in addition to bank records that show $3 million disbursed to Biden family members from individuals associated with the Chinese Communist Party, the committee has evidence of at least 11 different deals between CCP-related companies or people and the Biden family.
Hunter, Joe’s brother James, and Hallie Biden, the widow of Joe’s late son Beau, all received payments via Hunter’s business partner John “Rob” Walker the day after Walker received a $3 million wire transfer from individuals linked to the CCP.
The payments went into LLCs controlled by the Biden family, which Comer said directly benefit Joe Biden.
“One of the things that all of our whistleblowers have told us is that they were all — through these LLCs — paying for things for Joe Biden,” Comer said. “So that’s very curious, you know. This is getting to the point where it’s getting very close to Joe Biden.”
