Espionage trial of Evan Gershkovich begins in Russia

by ian

Russia’s espionage trial for American reporter Evan Gershkovich is officially underway.

The trial marks the first time Gershkovich has been seen publicly since his arrest by Russian officials in March of last year. He’s accused of spying on a tank repair facility, which both the US and his employer – the Wall Street Journal – deny.

If convicted, Gershkovich faces a potentially lengthy prison sentence. Critics accuse Russia of unjustly detaining Gershkovich to use in future prisoner swaps.

It’s believed that Gershkovich will only be set free in a prisoner exchange, as Russian courts convict over 99 percent of all defendants.
