EU approves groundbreaking AI regulations

The European Union just approved groundbreaking regulations on artificial intelligence yesterday, in a landslide vote of 523 to 46.

Under the act, high-risk systems must operate under human oversight, while all systems must proceed with greater transparency about their training processes.

The move also bans some systems, like facial recognition databases built from images found on the internet. Emotion recognition software used in workplace or school settings is also prohibited along with anything that manipulates human behavior.

The AI Act is expected to go into effect in May.
